THE LAKE

Overview

Species: Rainbow & Brown trout, kokanee
Best Months: Ice off through the fall
Fishing Style: Boat & float tube

East and Paulina Lakes sit inside the Newberry Caldera at over 6,300 feet, a pair of stunning high mountain stillwaters reached by a scenic drive southeast of Sunriver. Between them they hold rainbow and brown trout, kokanee, and even Atlantic salmon in East, and Paulina famously produced Oregon’s state record brown trout.

Cold, clear, and rich, these lakes offer big-fish stillwater fishing in a postcard setting.

Techniques

Both lakes have boat ramps and lakeside resorts, and a boat or float craft greatly expands your water. Target structure, springs, and the shallows in low light. Confirm current ODFW regulations, including any species-specific rules, before you fish. Want to make the most of a day in the caldera? Book a guided stillwater trip with our team.

Flies our staff suggests

  • Chironomids, Callibaetis nymphs & leeches under a indicator
  • Callibaetis, ant & beetle patterns when fish are rising
