The Lower Deschutes is one of Oregon’s premier trout and summer steelhead rivers. Flowing north through a rugged canyon to the Columbia, it offers miles of productive water for both wade anglers and drift boats.

Native redband trout are the foundation of the fishery. These wild fish are strong, aggressive, and perfectly suited to the river’s fast current and rocky structure. As summer progresses, returning steelhead begin moving into the system and provide opportunities well into the fall.

The Deschutes is known for its dependable hatches, technical dry fly fishing, and classic riffle and run water. Success often comes down to good presentations, careful wading, and understanding how fish use the river’s seams and current breaks.

Techniques

The Lower Deschutes is well suited to both walk and wade anglers and drift boat fishing. Most trout fishing is done with dry flies, nymphs, and dry dropper rigs, while steelhead anglers typically swing traditional flies through classic runs and tailouts.

Wading can be challenging in places due to the river’s strong current and boulder strewn bottom. Felt or rubber soles with studs are recommended, and many anglers carry a wading staff when fishing unfamiliar water.

Popular access points include Warm Springs, Trout Creek, and the stretches around Maupin. Drift boats allow anglers to cover more water, but fishing is done while anchored or wading, as Oregon regulations prohibit fishing from a floating boat on the Deschutes.
